چکیده
One of the main priorities marine scientific research is to provide practical information and guidance for biodiversity conservation management. In this context, identification key fragile habitat-forming species particularly important. Despite their ecological importance, whip corals in order Antipatharia remain poorly studied around world, especially South Pacific. During recent expeditions explore mesophotic deep benthic habitats Rapa Nui (Easter Island), dense assemblages black were observed situ . We here report first detailed description distribution abundance these coral associated fauna habitat. These descriptions based on analysis video surveys collected 67 remotely operated vehicle dives conducted 2014 through 2019 at three sites (Pukao seamount, Apolo peak, Island shelf slope) within Easter Ecoregion depths between 50 330 m. At least four morphotypes (yellow, red, white/orange, Pukao) unbranched detected. Each morphotype had polyps arranged a single row only one side corallum, diagnostic morphological character currently assigned antipatharian genus Stichopathes Samples yellow red using molecular techniques. analyses indicate that not monophyletic requires further revisions, conclusion consistent with previous studies. Extensive fields corals, primarily morphotype, present 28 from 60 245 m rocky substrates, coarse sand, or rhodoliths. Densities per frame up 58.2 ± 5.2 colonies –2 (average: 13.2 0.8), which represent some highest reported densities date. Numerous faunal groups, including ophiuroids, echinoids, fishes, assemblages. Our observations should be considered future management efforts Nui, where multi-use protected area was established 2018, as well adjacent international waters unprotected but likely harbor similar

TABLE 1 readily be made and the factors limiting distribution could be outlined. Branches of the living colonies were transplanted to various habitats, where regular observations could be made to determine if the animal was alive, dying, or dead. These transplants were put in places where it was hoped the effects of environmental extremes could be discovered . For example, the headland off Moku...
متن کاملAcademic paediatrics: Easter Island or Easter Sunday?
W hen the last tree on Easter Island was felled, the inhabitants belatedly realised that there was no escape from an eon of ‘‘groundhog days’’. Paediatrics, a discipline championed in the UK, faces a comparably monotonous future bereft of innovation and improvement. Levene and Olver present alarming data on staffing changes in UK academic paediatrics between 1999 and 2004. Most worrying is a 26...
متن کاملChaos in easter island ecology.
This paper demonstrates that a recently proposed dynamical model for the ecology of Easter Island admits periodic and chaotic attractors, not previously reported. Such behavior may more realistically depict the population dynamics of general ecosystems and illustrates the power of simple models to produce the kind of complex behavior that is ubiquitous in such systems.
متن کاملA New Black Coral (anthozoa: Antipatharia) from a Reef Wall Environment in Jamaica
A new species of antipatharian coral is described from Jamaica. Antipathes rubusiformis forms sprawling colonies, which spread sideways beneath overhangs on steep cliffs below 20 m depth. Colonies are attached by multiple holdfasts that develop at the tips of recurved branches where they contact the substratum. Branches are thin, often curved and set at wide angles; branching is irregular. Axia...
متن کاملLate colonization of Easter Island.
Easter Island (Rapa Nui) provides a model of human-induced environmental degradation. A reliable chronology is central to understanding the cultural, ecological, and demographic processes involved. Radiocarbon dates for the earliest stratigraphic layers at Anakena, Easter Island, and analysis of previous radiocarbon dates imply that the island was colonized late, about 1200 A.D. Substantial eco...
